Es gibt ihn noch, den AMERICAN DREAM – und es gibt den mutigen jungen Mann, der bereit ist, alles dafür zu geben.
2019, eine Kleinstadt in Nordrhein Westfalen – Ennepetal. Mario Greiner ist 22, studierte nach dem Abitur Betriebswirtschaft in einem dualen Studium und ist auf dem Sprung in die Arbeitswelt. Doch seit seiner Kindheit träumt er von etwas ganz anderem: Er möchte singen, tanzen, schauspielern; und all das am liebsten in New York City. Ein Traum, allzugut bekannt aus Filmen und Romanen. Zu groß für die Wirklichkeit? Zum Interview treffen wir uns in einem Restaurant in Manhattan, seiner Wahlheimat seit vier Jahren. Doch zurück nach Ennepetal. Wie fing alles an?
„Seit ich denken kann habe ich Faszination für Schauspiel, Musik und Tanz. Meine Versuche während der Grundschulzeit in Fußball oder Leichtathletik halfen dabei herauszufinden, dass das nichts war, was ich weiter verfolgen würde. Meine Großmutter war Balletttänzerin, meine Mutter spielt Klavier und Cello. Mein Vater hatte sich als Jugendlicher an der Blockflöte versucht. Ich habe seit jungen Jahren in Amateurtheatern mitgespielt und Hip-Hop getanzt. Musicals kamen dann später dazu. Gesangsunterricht begann ich erst nach dem Abitur, als mir vermittelt wurde, dass jeder singen lernen kann. Das wollte ich unbedingt mit meinem Körper machen können. Den Unterricht habe ich auch erstmal wirklich gebraucht.“ Mario lacht bei dem Gedanken an seine ersten Gesangsstunden.
Schlüsselmomente und Selbsterkenntnis
Gab es einen Schlüsselmoment, der dich von dir selbst überzeugt hat?
„Ja, mehrere. Ein ganz besonderer war, als ich im Unterricht über die Lautsprecher der Schule zu unserem Direktor gerufen wurde. Hier wartete Lehrpersonal auf mich, um mir mitzuteilen, dass das Theater Hagen nach meinen Kontaktdaten gefragt hatte. Wir hatten über das Comenius Projekt der EU in Zusammenarbeit mit meinem Gymnasium in einer deutsch-französischen Produktion, die auch in Bordeaux aufgeführt wurde, zusammengearbeitet. Kurzerhand sah ich mich in einer Hauptrolle für das Stück Räuberhände. Dazu gab es Promotionen mit lokalen Zeitschriften, Radio und Fernsehen. Dort konnte ich das erste Mal in den Alltag eines beruflichen Schauspielers schnuppern. Ich wurde für Proben und Aufführungen vom Unterricht befreit. Die Erfahrung und persönlichen Lerneffekte waren unglaublich für mich.“
Aufnahmeprüfung in NYC
Und wie ging es dann weiter? Wie sieht so eine Aufnahmeprüfung für New York aus?
„Eigentlich dachte ich immer, da sei nur etwas für Superstars. Aber so ist das nicht. Ich bin zum Casting nach Berlin gefahren. Dies wurde dann nach New York geschickt und ich wurde im Musical Theatre an der NEW YORK FILM ACADEMY angenommen. Ein Teil-Stipendium, Ersparnisse und familiäre Unterstützung machten die Ausbildung möglich. Die Dozenten dort waren oder sind nahezu alles Broadway Darsteller. Bessere Lehrer hätte ich mir nicht vorstellen können.
Das Studium HÄTTE so weiter gehen KÖNNEN. Doch wie bei so vielen jungen Menschen machte Corona auch Marios Pläne zunichte.
„Der Großteil des zweiten Semesters fand online statt. Die Classes wurden sehr gut für Zoom angepasst. Jedoch entschied ich für mich, dass ich das Studium für die Pandemie zumindest vorerst beenden werde. Zurück in Deutschland gab es im Gegenzug zum Bedarf im Schauspiel viele Chancen im wirtschaftlichen digitalen Wandel. So startete ich bei Deloitte in der Unternehmensberatung für Digitalisierungsprojekte. Dafür zog ich nach Hamburg. Die Erfahrungen und Learnings aus der Zeit würde ich niemals missen wollen. Dadurch konnte ich mich auf persönlicher und fachlicher Ebene immens weiterentwickeln, und habe Freundschaften geschlossen, die ich auch heute noch pflege.“
Ein paar Familienmitglieder freuten sich über seine Heimkehr – und wurden auf eine harte Probe gestellt. Denn 2022 nahm Mario Greiner zum zweiten Mal Abschied von seiner Familie. Und dieses Mal dauert er bis heute an.
Ein zweiter Abschied von der Familie
2023/24. Mario lebt in einer WG in Lower Manhattan, seine Vita ist in den letzen Jahren nahezu explodiert.
Zahlreiche Produktionen als Hauptdarsteller, Cover oder im Ensemble als Sänger und Tänzer reihen sich aneinander. Am meisten Spaß im Tanz macht dem jungen Deutschen Swing Dance und Stepptanz. Hier möchte er seine Fähigkeiten auf jeden Fall ausbauen.
Zum Glück verrät Mario Greiner zu einigen Produktionen noch mehr spannende Details:
„Ich arbeite freiberuflich als Darsteller für das deutsch-amerikanische Galli Theater in Lower Manhattan und seit ein paar Monaten arbeite ich im renommieren Ellen’s Stardust Diner, wo Newcomer und Broadwaydarsteller das beste aus der Pop und Musicalwelt beim Kellnern performen.“ (Anm. d. Red.: Hier durften wir Mario in Aktion erleben. Ein grandioses Konzept, bei dem sich die Gäste in eine Warteschlange – nicht selten bis zum nächsten Block – einreihen um gute zwei Stunden später einen der begehrten Tische zu ergattern)
So kann es weitergehen, mit dem handsome German guy. Denn bei uns bleibt der Eindruck zurück, dass sein Traum noch längst nicht ausgeträumt ist. Hoffentlich dürfen wir weiter über diesen mutigen jungen Mann berichten, der mit einer großen Portion Charme und vielseitigem Können das Zeug hat, den Broadway aufzumischen.

It still exists, the AMERICAN DREAM – and there is a courageous young man who is prepared to give everything for it.
2019, a small town in North Rhine-Westphalia – Ennepetal. Mario Greiner is 22, studied business administration in a dual study program after graduating from high school and is on his way into the working world. But since his childhood he has dreamed of something completely different: He wants to sing, dance and act, preferably in New York City. A dream all too familiar from films and novels. Too big for reality? We meet for an interview in a restaurant in Manhattan, his adopted home for the past four years. But back to Ennepetal. How did it all start?
„I’ve been fascinated by acting, music and dance for as long as I can remember. My attempts at soccer or athletics during primary school helped me to realize that this was not something I would pursue further. My grandmother was a ballet dancer, my mother plays the piano and cello. My father had tried his hand at the recorder as a teenager. I had been acting in amateur theaters and dancing hip-hop from a young age. Musicals came later. I only started singing lessons after leaving school, when I was told that anyone can learn to sing. I really wanted to be able to do that with my body. I really needed the lessons at first.“ Mario laughs at the thought of his first singing lessons.
Key moments and self-awareness
Was there a key moment that convinced you of yourself?
„Yes, several. One very special one was when I was called to our principal’s office over the school loudspeaker during a lesson. Teaching staff were waiting for me here to tell me that Theater Hagen had asked for my contact details. We had worked together through the EU’s Comenius project in collaboration with my secondary school on a Franco-German production that was also performed in Bordeaux. Without further ado, I saw myself in a leading role for the play Räuberhände. There were also promotions with local magazines, radio and television. This gave me my first taste of the everyday life of a professional actor. I was released from classes for rehearsals and performances. The experience and personal learning was incredible for me.“
Entrance exam in NYC
And what happened next? What does an entrance exam for New York look like?
„Actually, I always thought it was only for superstars. But it’s not like that. I went to the audition in Berlin. This was then sent to New York and I was accepted at the musical theatre conservatory of the NEW YORK FILM ACADEMY. A partial scholarship, savings and family support made the training possible. The teachers there were and are almost all Broadway actors. I couldn’t have imagined better teachers.
Up to 13 hours of training per day in singing, acting, acting for camera, all kinds of dance disciplines from ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, modern to ballroom, directing, music theory and musical theater business. There was an incredible range on offer. I was in heaven.“
Have you never been lonely?
„No, almost the opposite. At the beginning I had to share a room and I would have liked a bit more privacy. Nowadays, there are brief moments every few months when the high-rise buildings weigh on your mood. But that feeling goes away by itself after a few days.“
Out due to corona
Her studies COULD have gone on like this. But as with so many young people, corona also ruined Mario’s plans.
„Most of the second semester took place online. The classes were very well adapted for Zoom. However, I decided that I would stop studying for the pandemic, at least for the time being. Back in Germany, there were many opportunities in economic digital change in return for the demand in acting. So I started at Deloitte in management consulting for digitalization projects. I moved to Hamburg for this. I would never want to miss the experiences and lessons I learned during that time. It allowed me to develop immensely on a personal and professional level, and I made friends that I still maintain today.“
A few family members were delighted to see him return home – and were put to the test. Because in 2022, Mario Greiner said goodbye to his family for the second time. And this time it continues to this day.
A second farewell to the family
2023/24: Mario lives in a shared flat in Lower Manhattan and his CV has almost exploded in recent years.
Numerous productions as a leading actor, cover or in the ensemble as a singer and dancer follow one another. The young German enjoys swing dance and tap dance the most. He definitely wants to develop his skills in this area.
Fortunately, Mario Greiner reveals even more exciting details about some of the productions:
„In the spring of 2023, I completed filming for Riley in the feature film „Blue Wednesday“, a movie musical inspired by the epistolary novel Daddy Long Legs by Jean Webster. It was directed by Broadway great and filmmaker Pierre Marais.
I have a few other projects going on at the moment and I couldn’t be happier. Most recently, I finished a production of Cinderella in Brooklyn Heights. I was part of the ensemble and covered Lionel.
In Once Upon A Mattress I was in the role of Knight (dancer) and as the cover Minstrel.“
Mario Greiner is a regular performer in short films and readings of new musicals. Rehearsals are currently underway for his next leading role.

„In the Off Broadway production THE FRANKENSTEIN PROJECT, based on Mary Shelley’s „Frankenstein, I play Victor Frankenstein in this promising new musical. Opening night is February 2024 at the Theatre For The New City. Whoever wants to come …“, Mario Greiner winks mischievously.
54 BELOW – the living room of Broadway
Even the stage of the renowned 54 BELOW is not safe from Mario Greiner. He has already appeared several times in the „living room of Broadway“, as the non-profit cabaret in the basement of Studio 54 in Midtown Manhattan is known, in front of a mostly expert audience. Among others, as Marius from LES MISÉRABLES. He joins the ranks of well-known stars who have also performed at 54 BELOW. These include Patti LuPone (considered the most renowned musical actress of her time) and Peggy King (US pop and jazz singer)
Mario goes AMAZON PRIME
Mario was cast for the Amazon Prime series THE COLLEGE TOURS. It shows his everyday life from his time as a musical theater student.
„Some of the filming took place on our college campus in Los Angeles as well as New York. We were also on the Universal Studios film sets there. That was a great experience.“
Anyone who thinks that this is the end of the motivated artist’s days is mistaken.
Ellen’s Stardust Diner
„I work freelance as a performer for the German-American Galli Theater in Lower Manhattan and for the past few months I’ve been working at the renowned Ellen’s Stardust Diner, where newcomers and Broadway performers perform the best of the pop and musical world while waiting tables.“ (Editor’s note: Here we were able to see Mario in action. A great concept, where guests queue up – often right up to the next block – to get one of the coveted tables a good two hours later)
And what does Mario Greiner particularly love about living and working in New York City?
„I love being right on the pulse of the musical industry. New unique shows can be seen here immediately. You never know how successful a production will be and whether it will make it onto the international scene. The variety here is simply limitless. My highlights of the last few weeks were, for example, the musical HOW TO DANCE IN OHIO – unique in its kind with seven autistic performers and the musical HARMONY. It is based on the true events of the COMEDIAN HARMONISTS, an internationally renowned German master sextet before the Second World War. Another favorite project is working on New Works. New Works are readings, workshops and small productions of new musicals or plays. Sometimes you originate a role. There are quite a few of these New Works in New York, where producers and creatives try to create the next global musical success. The variety of stories, productions and musical genres is incredible,“ Mario’s eyes light up when he talks about these new projects.
Back to the roots?
But what about roles in Germany? Are they losing their appeal?
„Not at all. I’m open to everything. But in my head, New York is planned for the near future. Whenever I say that, I think of a saying from a friend: What does life laugh at the most? Your plans. So right now I’m living my dream in what I consider to be the most beautiful city in the world.“
It can go on like this with the handsome German guy. Because we are left with the impression that his dream is far from over. Hopefully we can continue to report on this courageous young man, who has what it takes to shake up Broadway with a large portion of charm and versatile skills.
